PJ's Story

Updated: Sep 15

In Loving Memory of Paullee Levy Diogene Jr. - February 18, 2022 – August 5, 2022

Our beautiful son, Paullee Levy Diogene Jr. “PJ”, was born with Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome (HLHS)—a rare and severe congenital heart defect in which the left side of the heart is underdeveloped. From his very first breath, he began a fight most adults couldn’t fathom. At just two days old, he underwent his first open-heart surgery. Though he never reached the final two stages of the surgical treatment plan for HLHS, he bravely endured multiple cath lab procedures, interventions, and hospitalizations. For five months, Paullee showed a strength that inspired everyone around him. His life, though brief, was filled with love, hope, and resilience.

Though we were fortunate enough not to face housing challenges during Paullee’s time in the hospital, we witnessed many other families who could deeply benefit from more support. Long-term hospitalizations often pull parents away from work, home, and daily stability—placing immense emotional and financial stress on the entire family. We’ve seen the toll this takes, and we believe no one should have to bear it alone, especially while caring for a critically ill child.

This is why we believe in the need for a dedicated housing support program for families with children in long-term care. The physical and emotional toll of prolonged hospital stays is already immense. Removing the barrier of housing insecurity can bring relief and allow families to be fully present for their child.

It can strengthen the family unit, improve mental health, and ultimately lead to better outcomes for all involved.

In honor of Paullee, and all the other brave children like him, we are committed to being a voice for families navigating the impossible. No parent should have to choose between being by their child’s side and having a place to sleep. Let’s build the kind of support system our children—and their families—deserve.
